The campus in Patras is located in the suburb of Rion. It is a self-contained campus located at the foot of mount Panachaico with a view over the Gulf of Corinth and the mountains of Central Greece across the water. Six-city campus: Patras, Messolonghi, Agrinio, Aigio, Pyrgos, Amaliada. The University has 29.901 Undergraduate students,3.931 Postgraduate students, 35 Departments, 161 Laboratories, 17 Clinics, 715 Faculty members, 226 Scientific Staff members and 454 Administrative Staff members. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Patras was established in 1977 and admitted its first students in October of the same year. The pre-clinical activities are housed in a new 20.000 m2 building while the clinical units occupy a 750 bed University Hospital next to the pre-clinical building. A new building is under construction where the research laboratories of the Clinical Departments will be housed. The medical complex includes also a building where the teaching amphitheaters and the medical library are located. The Education objectives of the undergraduate Medical Curriculum are twofold: First, to educate the future Physicians in the biological and medical sciences underlying the practice of medicine and to help them develop the medical skills necessary for the efficient and effective treatment of patients. But an equally important objective is to install to the students the values and the ethical principles which are necessary for the practice of medical profession. The Faculty has an Undergraduate Program of Studies in Medicine (Medical Degree, 6 years of studies) and 8 Graduate Programs: Medical Physics, Informatics for Life Sciences, Electronics and Processing of Information, Public Health, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Medicinal Chemistry: Design and Development of Pharmaceutical products, Chemical Biology. The Authorities of the Faculty are the director of the faculty, the General Assembly, the management council and the chairman. The Department of Public Health is part of the Medical School. It consists of 3 Professors. The main research interests of are the following: Epidemiology, Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, Molecular epidemiology, Environmental Microbiology and Chemistry, The Department of Public Health is full of equipment and is capable to perform the molecular protocols for the study of the epidemiology of infectious diseases. The objective is the detection of pathogens (bacteria, viruses, parasites). The Public Health laboratory is capable of Real Time PCR, electrophoresis gels variable domain, automated systems of image analysis, cell culture facilities (level 2), etc. It also participates in several European projects. Also, the laboratory participates in epidemiological studies of foodborne and waterborne epidemics as well as epidemiological studies on chronic diseases and surveillance studies.
